Rasteau is located on the slopes of the hills adjacent to the Dentelles de Montmarail mountains. Vine-growing in Rasteau can be traced back to the 11th century and the village has become famed for its red and sweet wines.
The Romero family has owned Domaine la Soumade for the almost 200 years and André Romero has established himself as a superstar of the region and beyond.
André’s winemaking is focussed on producing concentrated and substantial wines of colour, flavour and tannin. André is refreshingly open-minded to different vine-growing and winemaking methods, not just from outside Provence but also from the rest of the world. The long line of empty wine bottles from all over the world (that is displayed in the tasting cellar) is testament to his admiration of the wine world beyond Provence.
Domaine la Soumade owns 28 hectares of vineyards, of which three quarters are located on premium hillside sites. André Romero produces four Rasteau red wines of vibrant fruit and colour and intense concentration. These wines are made from grenache, syrah and mourvédre grapes which are grown on clay and limestone soils.
In addition, he makes a stunningly luscious Côtes du Rhône red which is made from 90% syrah and 10% viognier. He also produces wonderfully unctuous Rasteau sweet wines which are made from grenache and aged in oak barrels
