The Jaume family have been working their prized vineyards since the early 19th century. Alain Jaume and his two sons Christophe and Sébastien run Domaine Grand Veneur producing wines that the more savvy in the wine world are beginning to notice.
They produce two wonderful Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds: the first from a combination of sandy, clay and rolled stones terroir and “Les Origines” from the red clay, stony plateau which it shares with Château de Beaucastel.
This red clay plateau (on the other side of a road which marks the appellation boundary) also provides the fruit for Domaine Grand Veneur’s fantastically valued Côtes du Rhône Villages Les Champauvins.
Domaine Grand Veneur produces two stunning but very different Châteauneuf-du-Pape white wines. The white grape vines benefit from cooler north-facing slopes which produce highly aromatic and well-balanced wines.
The first white is produced from a blend of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Clairette. Drink it young for its fresh stone fruit aromas or wait 4 to 5 years once it has developed complex nutty characteristics. The “La Fontaine” is made exclusively from Roussanne grape and is fermented and aged in oak. This is a wine that reaches a wonderful and heady complexity after 3 years.
